Moving In

The Division of Student Affairs and the Department of Residence Life & University Housing welcome you to Howard University!

Please see additional move-in updates.

As a first-year student at Howard University, you are joining a remarkable family of students, faculty, staff and alumni. The current student body at Howard University is composed of individuals representing all 50 states and over 100 countries. Living with individuals of such diverse backgrounds in a college residential community offers you the opportunity to grow both academically and socially.

You will notice that we use the term “residence hall” instead of “dormitory.” This is because a college residence is much more than a place to sleep and study; it is the place you will consider home for the academic year.

Congratulations, best wishes, and welcome to the Howard University family! Our planning for your arrival is in full swing - please watch your email and the Howard University website for more information.

Renters Insurance

We recommend that all students carry renters insurance while they are away from home. Accidents happen, and it is important that all students take the proper steps to protect their personal belongings. There are many options when it comes to renters insurance. One of those companies is GradGuard, which specializes in college life protection.

Meal Plans

All students assigned to the Bethune Annex, College Halls North & South, Cook, and Drew Halls are required to purchase a meal plan. Information on purchasing meal plans is available on the Dining Services webpage.

Rules and Regulations

A successful community of any kind must be guided by rules and regulations that are designed for the common good. Most regulations pertaining to the housing environment are just good common sense for community living and will be provided to you prior to move in. Other information will be provided at the time of check-in and throughout the first weeks of the semester. All students are expected to become familiar with and abide by all university policies to ensure a successful college experience. Learn more by viewing the Residence Hall Handbook.
